My SO has a Designer 1 which was bought when they were relatively new. It has several embroidery hoops and we purchased software called Generations at the time. Due to life and kids there wasn't much time to do much with the machine.
Now it's past time for her to get more hobby time so we started getting the machine setup for embroidery again. However the machine only seems to be able to read some old floppies with designs that were created years ago. New floppies created via a USB floppy drive result in an error (like the machine cannot read the disk).
I'd think that the drive in the machine was broken except that it loads older floppies without issue. Husqvarna used some odd format with patterns in subdirectories so you can't just copy a file to a floppy (need to use software to create the floppy). Both old and new diskettes are readable on a PC using a USB floppy drive.
Any ideas on what else I might try to get this running again?

To put it another way, I think you are saying you want a free downloadable software program that will write embroidery designs (with 3 files in them each time) to a floppy disk in .shv format and not the single file of .hus instead? And maybe using some more current 64 bit windows operating system? Saying that, won't just make it so, but probably will get you a bit closer.
I don't know where that is, but I would look in those 2 here:
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/Support/Complimentary-Software
Also maybe in the free 30 day trail version of embird maybe?
https://www.embird.net/
Or someone else that is actually doing it, might post and help you?
Really old Buzztools 3.1 with some updates and patches in it, (I still got that running in a computer) I think used to do that, but that was for older 32 bit windows operating systems and was not free- I think more like $150 or so, even back when. And it came on a floppy to install it's self, even. I'm thinking even if you found the installation for that on some old floppy, and the up dates to make t write to .shv, it probably won't run in a 64 bit operating system. You don't say what operating system you got or are trying things with though. But also check old
https://www.buzztools.com/download-demos.asp for free stuff possibly too.

The files for the Designer 1 must be in .shv format. If you have any of the Viking embroidery software it should write floppies in this format. Not sure if other software is able to or not.

Embrilliance software will write .shv files.

I have a client who uses the .shv format. He can use designs created and exported from Embird without any problem. I don't know if he is running them through his own software, or directly from the files I send.
PM me and I'll send you a simple .shv file made in Embird and you can see if it will work for you.

I have the Viking 5D software and it takes .HUS files and wires .SHV files onto a floppy within directories called Menu01/Menu02/... The Designer 1 gives a message about a 'General disc error' when loading the floppy. I have a couple of original Viking floppies and those are being read ok. A chkdsk on both the Viking floppies reports that there are bad sectors, while the newly created floppy shows no bad sectors. I am using a USB floppy drive to write to, I'm going to see if I can dust off an old PC that has a floppy drive in case the USB floppy drive has some unknown issue.

I used to have that machine, and still have the same software, maybe you need to reformat the disk

It could help to format the new floppy disks in the machine and not on the computer.

Embird thinks it cannot make a .shv disk that the machine will accept unless the actual sewing machines firm ware (in the sewing machine) is updated to version 2.4 in the sewing machine even. I don't think that should count for Vikings own stuff, if it worked for you before with what you had, but you never know. So maybe check your own version of firmware in the machine even?
I don't know where you would get the machines fimware 2.24 version now, but it used to be linked to this at one point.
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/media/updates/D1_V2.24_Disk_.zip
But it's not right there for download, anymore.
Maybe if Viking does not have it someplace else, you could back track it, by looking at the Viking Web sites, in different points in time, using the wayback machine even?
I don't have that machine, myself, but I have had to do stranger things sometimes to even get some embroidery machine to work. Particular as time goes by. Might be patches and updates to the 5Dsoftware system too even. It could be something newer in something conflicts with something else even, and some update or patch might undo that. You never know.
Also I guess you could put in a floppy that works for you v.s. one that does not now, into a slot in a computer, and use something like even windows note pad to try to compare file headers on them, but even if you find a difference, I don't think that would help you get it written any different actually.
Since embird editing is free trial I think for 30 days, you don't got much to loose by trying to create a .shv floppy there and just seeing what happens. Plus that would give you two sources of them, written from different places, to try with the machine too even.

Re: Husqvarna Viking Designer 1 and copying designs to floppy[solved] (posted on 1/5/19 3:50 PM)
I solved the issue! Over the holidays I started to pull a floppy drive out of an old server with the intent of installing it in one of the two PCs we use daily. Turned out that neither has an interface for a floppy drive, even the PC with a circa 2010 motherboard. In the meantime I ordered a disk of designs off of eBay. On receipt they loaded in the sewing machine without issue so I looked back at the USB floppy drive and determined it would be worth getting a second USB floppy drive as it was obvious at that point that the drive in the sewing machine was actually ok and I'd been looking in the wrong place for the problem.
A new USB floppy drive was ordered from Amazon and worked first time, designs saved from the Husqvarna 5D software to it load into the sewing machine just fine. So my original USB floppy was the problem all along! My SO is very happy and has sewn a couple of sample designs to confirm that evrything is working.
Thanks for the comments and suggestions - they helped me narrow down the options on where things were broken - I would not have suspected that the original USB floppy was the root cause. Now its time to see if I can get the Generations software working again.
